Having stayed at Chalet Alpine over the past couple of seasons I would like to thank the owners for creating a great home from home. The property is just a short walk into the centre and is almost ski in - ski out; ask about the run down across the road. Inside we have stayed in both apartments and always found them to be very warm and comfortable with a good wifi connection. All in all, we have found Chalet Alpine to be great value for money in comparison to other properties we have stayed at in Zell Am See.

An amazing place to stay, situated close to the Zell Express (short ski). The house is homely with all that you could need and only a short walk up the hill from the town (keeps you fit). Zell is a great ski area with close by areas to explore too. I have been several times and am always discovering new places to ski.

Zell am See offers a fantastic option for a family holiday for both summer and winter seasons. The apartment is really well located for direct access to the ski gondola, giving you fast access to the slopes. Other great resorts including Kaprun and Salbach are also very easy to reach by a short bus service. In summer, the apartment allows you to enjoy the best of the mountains and lake, whether it’s hiking, adventure sports, cycling or strolling around and swimming in the beautiful lake. The town centre is a 15-minute walk down the hill, although there are also plenty of great local restaurants and bars closer to the apartment. The apartment is clean, quiet and well equipped with all the basics. Would recommend.

Bachweg 5 is the perfect place to stay in Zell am see. With ski in ski out and a pleasant 10 minute walk into the centre of town it is ideally located. It easy to jump on a bus and go to the higher resort of kitschsteinhorn or ski over to saalbach and hinterglemm for some variety, although the shcmittenhoe is a very picturesque beautiful tree lined resort which is hard to beat.

The path around the lake is 11 km and makes for a good bike ride or walk, taking in the views of the surrounding mountains and spectacular scenery.

Once your exercise is over, you can relax in one of the many bars and restaurants situated in the town or shop in many of its quaint stores.

Click this link to visit the main Zell am See-Kaprun website for more information.

Kaprun

Kaprun winter with a beauty

Kaprun is a small town approximately 20 minutes south of Zell am See. Kaprun is the gateway to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and offers fantastic year-round skiing and snowboarding. More information can be found here.

Kaprun town itself is beautiful and now boasts one of Austria’s best spa complexes: the Tauern Spa Kaprun, with many indoor/outdoor pools, extensive treatments/massage, and restaurants.

Saalbach Hinterglemm

Beautiful shot of the snowy mountains in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Hinterglemm, Austria

Must See & Do

Hiking

Whether you want to hike on your own or with a guide, you will find an unbelievable array of hiking trails available in the Zell am See area and the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The two main mountains in the immediate vicinity – the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn – offer a combined hiking and bathing ticket. These are available from the base station of the Areitbahn cable car and allow unlimited use of the cable cars on either mountain, plus free access to any of the 4 outdoor and 2 indoor pools in Zell am See or Kaprun for 6 days (Tauern Spa not included). The ticket also entitles you to free travel on buses in the Zell am See or Kaprun area.

You can get free trail maps for both mountains, with each route rated according to its difficulty.

Further details to be found on the Zell am See-Kaprun website, the Kitzsteinhorn website, the Schmittenhöhe website or the Hohe Tauern NP website.

Cycling & Mountain Biking

A network of 2,000 km of cycle paths and mountain bike trails criss-crosses the Pinzgau and Zell am See region, of which 550 km are cycle paths through the valleys suitable for families and casual cyclists.

Of these, the most famous is undoubtedly the Tauern Radweg (Tauern Cycle Trail), which allows cyclists to follow the banks of the Salzach river from Krimml to Zell am See and on to Salzburg.

On the family-friendly cycle network, you can make your way down clearly marked cycle paths, safe from busy traffic, along crystal-clear streams, and through tranquil villages.

There is a narrow gauge railway running from Zell am See to Krimml – the Pinzgau Lokalbahn – that pulls a special bike carriage in the summer (from the end of April to the beginning of October). This allows you to take your bike to Krimml to start your ride or bring you home if you do not want to cycle the whole way. You can find the Zell am See start/end station at the main train station in town.

Further details of the cycle routes can be found on the Tauern Radweg website and on  Radwandern.com.

Golf

Zell am See-Kaprun has a golf club that offers two excellent 18-hole courses. A bit further out, you can also play at GC Urslautal (Maria Alm), GC Gut Brandlhof (Saalfelden), and GC Mittersill (Mittersill).

The Golf Alpin Card (available at any of the golf clubs mentioned or through the internet) offers the opportunity to play at these (and 23 other Salzburg and Tyrol clubs) at reduced prices. There are two types of Golf Alpin Cards: one with 5 green fees or one with 3 green fees.

More information can be found on their website.

Please observe the possible handicap requirements of individual clubs.

Fishing

About an hour’s drive from Zell am See are the rivers Saalach and Saalach, which not only yield trout but also some grayling. You can also try your hand at lake fishing when visiting Zell am See, and guides can be hired upon request.

Hiring a guide might be a good idea as they will know exactly where to take you. It could save you a whole lot of time, and since you have to pay for a fishing license in Austria, you probably don’t want to fuss around looking for a good spot when you could be fishing.

Tourist fishing licenses as well as equipment can be obtained from Sport Achleitner, Gasthof Seewirt, and Hotel Bellevue.

Must See & Do

Skiing & Snowboarding

The obvious premier skiing/boarding areas of Zell am See are the slopes of either the  Kitzsteinhorn  with its glacier or the Schmittenhöhe. Access to Saalbach Hinterglemm for skiing is now easier with the opening of the Zell am See Express lift and run, taking you directly into the Saalbach valley. At the bottom, a short regular bus ride takes you to Saalbach, but it is now possible to ski back to Zell. We await the fully connected lift system linking both resorts. A 20-minute drive northwest takes you to the amazing ski circus of Saalbach Hinterglemm, while a short 25-minute drive to the west brings you to the Panoramabahn in Mittersill/Hollersbach or Pass Thurn, your entry point for the Kitzbühler Alpen, famous for the Hahnenkamm race.

There are plenty of ski schools to choose from, but if you are a beginner, we recommend you pick a school in Zell am See which offers lessons at the Schmittenhöhe.

Snowshoeing

You might consider leaving the skis behind for a day and trying out snowshoeing. This winter hiking method takes you away from the ski slopes and the summer trails, and lets you experience nature in a new way. Guided tours are available for the Schmittenhöhe,, as well as in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Ice skating

When the Zeller lake has frozen over and it is deemed safe to cross, an ice rink is cleared of snow at its northernmost tip. And of course, there is the indoor skating rink at the Hallenbad Zell am See-Kaprun.

Wellness

In 2011, Tauern Spa Kaprun opened its doors. It is one of the best spas in Austria, and we highly recommend it.

It boasts 12 indoor/outdoor pools and a variety of different saunas and steam baths, such as the Finnish sauna, bio sauna, and stove sauna. One very special feature is the salt laconium with a temperature of 55 degrees. In the aromatic steam bath, there are fragrances to relax or invigorate, plus high humidity – utter bliss!

Directions

Address: Bachweg 5, 5700, Zell am See, Austria

Zell am See is situated between three airports: Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Munich.

From these airports, transfers can be made via train (great value and amazing scenery), hire car, or private transfers.

Salzburg is the closest airport, followed by Innsbruck, then Munich.

For train tickets, look at the http://www.oebb.at website.

Once in central Zell am See, follow signs to the City Express lift, which is on Schmittenstrasse. Continue up the hill for approximately 1,000 yards and keep an eye out for the small road Bachweg on the right, just after the parking area for Der Waldhof hotel and a sign for Pension Gschaidner.

Turn right onto Bachweg and, at the bottom (before crossing the bridge!), on the left is a small parking area. The allotted car parking space is the front right-hand space only!

The City Express lift is at the bottom of Schmittenstrasse, the main road up the hill. Bachweg runs off this road. The City Express can be accessed in good snow via a trail opposite the house with a short walk up a slope about 100 yards along the track or a 7-minute walk down the road to the lift station.

At the top of Schmittenstrasse are all three main lifts servicing Zell am See. The ski bus stops 100 meters up the road on the right.

In good snow, the trail opposite can be skied back, taking you opposite the house.

The ski bus stop that takes you to the top of Schmittenstrasse is a 5-minute walk up the road on the right-hand side. For bus times, look at the http://www.salzburg-verkehr.at website.
